FAQ

Frequently asked questions!

You guys asked so I've taken some time off to answer for you all :)

What kind of camera do you use & what lenses?
Well at the moment I'm still using my beginner level entry camera which happens to be a nikon D3000. I've had this baby for roughly 3 years now and he's been so good to me. As for lenses i usually use my 50mm 1.4 for most shoots that i take indoors and outdoors. I've still got my kit lenses but i hardly ever use them anymore, for the coming future I plan to get more prime lenses and am dying to get my hands on a 85mm 1.4!!!

How long have you been doing photography for? are you self taught? or have you done some kind of study?
I've been doing photography for about 3 years and i basically started with self taught. I was slowly learning from online, youtube anywhere that could help teach me the basics. And i have tried to go and study for awhile but i found it non inspiring and moved along continuing to teach myself.

Do you work as a photographer full time?
Not at the moment, but I do hope to in the near future.

Where do you find your models?
Well when i first started i used friends, family or anyone who didn't mind being in front of the camera. I worked my way around from using my friends to finding more local models usually from sites such as "Model Mayhem" (a good site to make new contacts and work with other creatives). To now working with agency represented models from agencies such as "Viviens", "Tamblyns" to "Dallys" from around Brisbane. Which is where I get most of my models from to work with on a daily basis.

Do you look back at your first work and have a laugh about it?
Yes, i have gone through some of my old work and had a bit of giggle about them. Always thinking to myself, "why would i make the model pose like this or that?""what in the world was i thinking?", basically i had a pretty imaginative mind!

Where do you find your locations?
I actually rarely go location scouting, although i know i really should take some time to go scouting but i really don't have the time to go wondering about. I would most likely keep note of a location or ask around for suitable locations to whatever I'm shooting next. Also Models, Makeup artists & stylist always have ideas for locations and I'm pretty open minded with what they think is good!

Do you have tips for models?
Uhmm.. well i don't have that much advice or tips for models, but i guess if there really was anything it'll be turn up to the shoot ready & groomed. Last thing you want to find out is the model had a late night before hand & turning to the shoot looking like CRAP! Yes it has happened before!! haha. Be sure to research or find out as much as you can about the shoot whether it has a concept and find out who else you'll be working with. Most times there will be a whole creative team involved so make sure you take the time to go through their work. And lastly make sure you practice in front of a mirror or see yourself posing as this will help majorly on getting all your angles perfect! LOTS & LOTS OF PRACTICE!! you can never have enough really.

Are you more of a on location shooter or in the studio more?
Well i started with location first and have always adored  working with the natural light! so i would have to say location!! although studio does have its advantages especially when its a hotter season and you can shoot indoors with air con on blast!! I recently only just got into studio work and still have so much to learn so maybe just maybe i might change my mind!! haha

Do you ever look for assistants or need anyone to even help carry your equipment?
Honestly at the moment I'm not really looking to take anyone under my wing just yet, but that doesn't mean that i wouldn't. I've always been by myself when i'm shooting, the only time where there will be others apart from myself is when i have a makeup artist or stylist on board. They usually help me out with carrying things about or holding reflectors and such but maybe i might pick someone to come hold my reflector!! keep an ear out for my future castings for assistants :)

Do you edit your own photos? or do you get someone else to do it for you? What programs do you use if you do?
Yes, I retouch & edit all my own photos that i take from a session. hopefully in the futre i could hire someone to take the weight off my shoulders and help me out!! :) Currently using Adobe CS6 Photoshop & Light Room.

How often do you shoot?
I shoot roughly 2-3 days a week and i usually have 2 bookings in one day which go from 9-12pm & 1-4pm in my studio. Otherwise if I were shooting on location time varies depending on what i was shooting whether it needed to be early or late in the afternoon.

Where does your inspiration come from?
I draw inspiration from all the things around me. Mainly other photographers, i always go through the latest issues of VOGUE, HARPER's BAZAAR, RUSSH or anything high end fashion! Tear the sheets and put them in a MASSIVE folder i have created for all my inspirations. I also enjoy going through sites online such as TUMBLR (a awesome place to draw some inspiration from, as the dashboard is always filled with something new!!), fashion blogs, FASHION GONE ROUGE, BEN TRAVATO BLOG. My most recent new thing is PINTEREST!! <3 it's so amazing to go through and find everything!!

Do you have a favourite photographer?
YES! LARA JADE!! I've been following her work for the past 4 years since getting into photography. I've watched her grow and get more international work worldwide!~ I also love Steven Chee's work as his from Australia, i've been following his work quite a bit as well.

How does someone get into fashion photography?
I guess you just have to research about it, go to events, put yourself out there, and make contacts with those connected to the industry, it's all about who you know and not so much what you know! ;)

Do you like collaborating with other photographers?
I don't mind it, I've done so before, but i guess it's always good to have another set of eyes to shoot along side. Would love to collaborate with my idols though!! :D
Do you shoot on a TFP (time for print/photos) basis? If so how do i qpproach you about that? I did used to always shoot TFP when i first started, but i've been going at this for almost 3 years now and i think I've had enough practice to be still doing TFP. I still do but I've limited myself and only really work on a TFP basis with modelling agencies and personal projects ONLY. If i find that you have a unique look that i would be interested in shooting, i will agree on a TFP shoot but only if it will benefit both our portfolios, so with that said don't feel afraid to shoot me an email or message if you have an idea about shooting! :) I don't bite!!
Do you work with makeup artists, stylists etc every time you shoot? Yes & no, but lately i've got together a usual team that i work with on most of my shoots whether it be a conceptual shoot, test shoot or model portfolio shoot. I'm always on the lookout to work with new creatives, so shoot me an email or message and maybe we can set up a shoot!

What type of photography do you usually shoot?
I shoot editorials based on fashion & beauty, portraits and some special occasions although i try to stick close to just shooting fashion & beauty. I've even been asked a couple of times whether i shoot weddings, which is still an indecisive answer as i'm only a one man team. haha but maybe i will consider in the near future. I've heard it's hard work and draining!!! :'/
